Reading Goal

We’re calling on the community to demonstrate the value of reading! It teaches. It keeps the mind sharp. It transports and entertains. Spend some time reading (or listening to) books this summer and add to the community tally.

Books in any genre and format can be counted. That includes hardbacks, paperbacks, e-books, audiobooks, Playaways, talking books and books read to others. You can read books from home, the bookstore, the library or wherever else you can find them. You choose what you read.

This year's goal is: 25,000

17,001

How to Participate

Adult Summer Reading

Adults can enter weekly drawings for gift certificates and event passes, such as the Smoky Hill River Festival, Rolling Hills Zoo and the Salina Art Cinema, by logging the books you are reading. Each book review you write enters you into an additional drawing for Salina Area Chamber of Commerce gift certificates! Simply complete a book log or book review.

Adult Summer Reading is designed for those 18 and older. You must log your reading to enter drawings for prizes. Only books read between May 21–July 20 should be logged. Read the Summer Drawing Rules.

Children & Teens Summer Reading

Children and teens can enter weekly drawings for books and passes to community locations like Rolling Hills Zoo and Kenwood Cove by logging the books you are reading. Drawings will be held for three different age groups — Littles (ages 0-5), Elementary (ages 6-11) and Tweens/Teens (ages 12-17). Simply complete a book log. Only books read between May 21-July 20 should be logged.

Each event hosted by Youth Services that you attend gives you a chance to enter drawings for end-of-summer prizes, like Hatchimals, LEGO building kits and walkie-talkie sets. You will receive an entry ticket that you can place in the drawing of your choice. Read the Summer Drawing Rules.

Summer Learning

Summer learning worksheet packets will be available throughout the summer in the Technology Center. Children up to age 13 can complete packets to earn a drawing entry for end-of-summer prizes, like science kits, LEGO sets and family games. You will receive an entry ticket that you can place in the drawing of your choice. Packets will be available beginning May 18, and the last day to return them is July 19. Additionally, each educational class hosted by the Technology Center that you attend gives you an entry. Read the Summer Drawing Rules.
