Text:

16 March 1861
Big Springs

Dear parents,

We arrived in Leavenworth last Thursday in good health and spirits. The horses stood the trip first rate. They are looking as well as they did when we left home. We met brother James at the river. He had been waiting for a week. He is looking well and his team is in pretty good order. The folks were all well when he left home. Robert Crawford and I went to Mr. King's yesterday to see if I could get work there. If I don't get work at Salina, he said he would give me work if I came back down, but I think I can get work from Mr. Phillips. I have plenty of money left to bring me back if I want to come. Willie has some of his money left to take out with him. I am highly pleased with the appearance of the country as far as I have seen of it yet. I write this 50 miles west of Leavenworth. We are all well. I hope this may find you all enjoying the same blessing. Give my best respect to all inquiring friends. In haste.

Your affectionate son, Robert Muir
