In September and October, Salina Public Library invites you
and the rest of Salina to read “The Worst Hard Time” by Timothy Egan.
The library has scheduled several events in conjunction with the
community-wide read, but invites you to create your own events
and discussions with your coworkers, neighbors, families and friends.

Volunteer

Adults

Volunteers are a vital part of Salina Public Library. Without the time and skills they share with us, some services would not be possible.

Every Department in the library makes use of volunteers. Some have jobs at the library, while others do their work for us out in the community. Some jobs are ongoing, while others are short-term.

If you are interested in joining our volunteer team, you may fill out a volunteer application online or pick one up at the circulation desk. For more information on volunteer opportunities at the library, call Lori at 825-4624, ext. 249, or email This email address is being protected from spambots. Home Delivery Book Selector
This job is perfect for readers who read a variety of fiction and/or some nonfiction. Selectors choose books for 2-6 homebound patrons according to their reading preferences. The selectors' schedules are flexible -- come anytime the library is open during "selection week." Must be able to work alone and lift heavy book bags. This job takes about 1 - 1 1/2 hours per month.
We currently have no openings for this position.
For more information, contact Lori at 825-4624, ext. 249, or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.  .

Home Delivery Driver
An excellent choice for stay-at-home moms and retirees. Home delivery drivers deliver and pick up books to 2-6 patrons on the third Tuesday morning of each month. Drivers use their own cars to make deliveries and often take special book requests from patrons. Reliability is a must. Lifting heavy book bags is required. This job takes about 1 - 1 1/2 hours per month.
For more information on volunteering for the Home Delivery program, contact Lori at 825-4624, ext. 249, or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.  .

Technology Center
The library also welcomes responsible volunteers who would like to help in the Technology Center. For additional information, contact Melanie, Tech Center Manager, at 825-4624, ext. 233, or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.  .

Friends
Founded in 1985, the Friends of the Salina Public Library serves as a behind-the-scenes “booster club” for library projects and programs.
Some volunteer activities for Friends members are shelf reading/organizing, hosting at special library or Friends events, reviewing repaired audio tapes, bringing goodies to special events, assisting with organizing the FSPL book sale items, lending a hand with the art/book sale, assist with ticket and book sales for the spring poetry series, and helping out with receptions and book sales for visiting authors.

Circulation Department
Volunteers in the Circulation Department help straighten books and shelf read, or clean and shelve media. Volunteers typically work 3 hour shifts 2 or 3 days per week.

Teens

If you are between the ages of 12 and 17, you can be a teen volunteer. The Youth Services Department is a busy place in the summer and we need your help.
Our teen volunteers are responsible for registering children for our annual Summer Reading Program, overseeing weekly games and contests and helping with special events and programs.
To become a teen volunteer, fill out an application, which will be available at area schools in early March, at the Salina Public Library or online, bring it in and we'll call you to set up an interview. Our volunteers receive a cool T-shirt and lots of praise from our staff!
The hours you volunteer may one day give you a chance at a Teen Volunteer Scholarship, sponsored by the Friends of the Library.
It's a big responsibility but you will gain work experience and the knowledge that you have helped the children of our community as well as the staff of your library. Our teen volunteers are an extremely important part of our Summer Reading Program.

Growing up in Salina, I loved laying in one of the old bathtubs in the childrens section, a stack of books on the ground beside me.
